Abilene Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Abilene
Abilene is a city that is located in the center of the US state of Texas. It is in Taylor and Jones counties and is the largest city in the Abilene Metropolitan Area. It also serves as the seat of government for Taylor County. English is the primary spoken and written language of Abilene. The area around Abilene was once a livestock shipping depot along the Texas and Pacific Railway. It was founded in 1881 and was the ending point for the Chisholm Trail. The name was chosen by Clabe Merchant, who is considered to be the father of Abilene. The city was incorporated in 1882 and became a popular spot for businesses and manufacturing plants to move to because of its location on the railroad.
The city grew during World War 2 because of the construction of Camp Barkeley that was constructed near the city. Today Dyess Air Force Base is the largest employer in the city and had caused the city’s population to almost double because of military personnel and their families.
Abilene has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August.
There are several cultural attractions in Abilene. The Grace Museum and the Paramount Theater are buildings that have been recently restored and incorporated into the downtown renovation project. The Frontier Texas Museum chronicles the history of the area and houses several historical artifacts and bits of memorabilia from the cowboy era of the 19th century. The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature is a public museum that houses art and displays for children. The Abilene Zoo is one of the largest and most well maintained zoos in all of Texas. It hoses education programs throughout the year for visitors of all ages. Other cultural exhibits include the Center for Contemporary Arts, the Abilene Harmonic, and the 12th Armored Division Museum.
