Allentown Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Allentown
Allentown is a city that is located in the eastern region of the US state of Pennsylvania. It is the third largest city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. It serves as the seat of government for Lehigh County and is situated on the banks of the Lehigh River. The city was planned by William Allen, a respected and wealthy businessman from Philadelphia, in 1762. The area was originally used simply as a hunting and fishing spot, but soon more residents began to move there and it became a full fledged town. It became famous for housing the Liberty Bell during the American War for Independence. The bell was hidden in Allentown to prevent the British from finding it. The city became an industrial hub when the Lehigh Canal was built and connected the Lehigh River to larger waterways. This made it possible for factories to be constructed in Allentown and for merchants to ship their goods all over New England. The iron and railroading industries were the most lucrative in the early days of the industrialization movement. Unfortunately many industrial companies have moved away from Allentown and the city has been attempting to replace those businesses with other lucrative companies.
Because of its location in New England, Allentown has a humid continental climate, which means hot summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip well below freezing from time to time. Snowfall occurs during the winter months, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.
The Allentown Symphony Orchestra hosts regular musical performances at the Allentown Symphony Hall. Allentown is also home to one of the oldest city bands in America, the Allentown Band. The Allentown Art Museum houses several thousand works of local and international art. The Baum School of Art offers art classes to the general public, including fashion design and ceramic classes.
Lehigh Valley International Airport services the greater Allentown area with flights to surrounding areas. Allentown is within driving distance of Newark International and Philadelphia International Airport as well.
