Amarillo Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Amarillo
Amarillo is a city that is located in the northern portion of the state of Texas. It is the largest city in the Texas Panhandle and the 14th largest city in the entire state. It is located along Interstate 40, one of the main easts to west shipping interstates in the United States.
The city was originally a settlement called Oneida, but the name was changed to Amarillo, which is a Spanish word that means "yellow". The reason for the change is probably due to the yellow wildflowers that grow in and around Amarillo in the spring time. Henry Sanborn began purchasing land near present day Amarillo in 1888 and developing it. Soon a railroad was added and the city became one of the most important cattle shipping stations in the country. Feed and grain businesses moved into town as well and Amarillo began a growth boom. Soon, gas and oil were discovered nearby and the city really began to take off. The city prides itself on being the "Helium Capital of the World" and the US National Helium Reserve is stored in the city.
The city of Amarillo has a semi-arid climate which means that summers are hot and winters can be unexpectedly cold. Occasional blizzards have been known to hit the city in the winter months. Summer temperatures usually stay in the 80's Fahrenheit, sometimes 90's. Not much rainfall occurs, but it comes usually in January and February.
One of the primary memorials to see in the city of Amarillo is the Texas Panhandle War Memorial, which honors all the local men and women who died or served in battle. There are several spots of natural beauty around the city. Palo Duro Canyon State park is the second largest canyon system in the United States behind the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This canyon is located south of the city and is popular with locals and visitors alike. The Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument pays homage to the rich flint mining history of the surrounding area.
The Amarillo city is serviced by the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. It offers nonstop service to larger local airports such as Dallas-Fort Worth, Memphis, Houston, Denver, and Las Vegas.
