Birmingham Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Birmingham
Birmingham is a city in Alabama located on Interstate 65. It is the largest city in the state of Alabama and is the seat of government for Jefferson County. Nearly one fourth of all residents in the state currently live in the city of Birmingham. The city was founded after the US Civil War to be a southern industrial center that would be similar to the great industrial cities in the north, such as Pittsburgh. In fact Birmingham has been referred to as the "Pittsburgh of the South" and the "Magic City". The major industries of the city have been iron and steel. Several railroads were built into the city which helped it to grow and export it's industrial products. The city also has access to water along the Black Warrior River, which gives the city water access to the port town of Mobile, Alabama.
The city has a humid subtropical climate and sees very warm temperatures in the summer and very mild temperatures in the winter. July temperatures generally stay in the high 80's Fahrenheit while January temperatures generally stay in the 50's Fahrenheit. The city sees a lot of precipitation during the year, with the most rain falling in the months of January and March.
Birmingham has been called the cultural and entertainment capital of Alabama because of the number of theaters and museums in the city. The Alabama Symphony Orchestra is the largest and most well known orchestra in the state. The Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts is home to the Birmingham Opera and several other fine arts performing organizations. The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame offers free concerts and jazz classes to the public.
The Fair Park Arena hosts several local sporting events. The Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is one of the most popular film festivals in the south. The city is also home to two universities, Samford University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Birmingham is serviced by Birmingham Shuttles worth International Airport which offers flights with United, Delta, American, Continental, US Airways, and Southwest Airlines.
