In 1861 the state selected Boulder to be the home of the state's primary university. The campus was constructed soon thereafter and the University of Colorado has been a key part of the city every since.

Boulder has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip below freezing from time to time. Snowfall occurs during the winter months, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.
