Bradenton is a city that is located on the western coast of the US state of Florida. Florida is the most extreme southeastern state in the continental United States. It is bordered to the north by Alabama and Georgia, to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the south by the Caribbean Sea, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. It is the most populous city of the Venice - Bradenton - Sarasota metropolitan area. The region around Bradenton was first settled by the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon in the 16th century. It was later named in honor of Dr. Joseph Braden who built forts nearby to protect the residents from hostile indigenous peoples. The city was finally incorporated in 1943.
The region of south Florida has long been a hub for the citrus industry. One of the largest national distributors of citrus products in Tropicana, which is headquartered in Bradenton. It employs a large percentage of the population in Bradenton and ships its products all over the country.
Bradenton is one of the few places in Florida where live manatees are kept in captivity. Manatees used to be plenteous in the waters around Florida, but fishing and boating have reduced their numbers. They are now a protected species and the Parker Manatee Aquarium in Bradenton houses several of the large creatures.
The Sarasota - Bradenton International Airport is the closest commercial airport to Bradenton. It offers connecting flights to larger nearby airports as well as some flights to the Caribbean.
