The canals around the city provide access to the Gulf of Mexico by boat from parts of the city that are far inland. Cape Coral has a subtropical climate, which means lots of sunshine with warm temperatures year round. Summer temperatures generally get into the 90's Fahrenheit, but winter temperatures rarely dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the areas extensive rainfall comes in the months of June through August.

The city's location on the water makes it a natural spot for water tourism. This includes boating, fishing, swimming, and water craft sports. The SunSplash Water Park is a water park in the city limits that is very popular during the hot summer months. In addition to the water park there are over 30 parks throughout the city and 7 golf courses.

Cultural attractions of the city include the Historical Museum of Cape Coral, the Cultural Park Theater, and the Cape Coral Art League. The most popular annual event in Cape Coral is the Independence Day celebration which includes fireworks, displays, and food. The German American community in Cape Coral hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration at the same time that the traditional one is held in Munchen, Bavaria in Germany.
