A Traveler's Guide to Chandler

Chandler is a city near Phoenix in the state of Arizona. It is bordered to the north by the city of Tempe, to the west by Phoenix, and to the east by the city of Gilbert. Chandler was named after Dr. Alexander Chandler who was the first veterinary surgeon in the Arizona Territory who settled nearby. He drew up the initial plans for the city and built the first town office and high school. Soon to follow was the luxurious Hotel San Marcos, which became the first golf resort in the state.

Chandler became somewhat of a resort town for folks living nearby. Tourism and agriculture became the staple sources of income for the town. The town suffered during the Great Depression but in 1941 Williams Air Force Base was built nearby and the population of the town grew. It has grown steadily since then, due in part to the growth of neighboring towns such as Glendale and Phoenix.

Recently several large corporations have moved their headquarters to Chandler such as Intel, Motorola, and Microchip. Because of its location in the desert, Chandler has an arid climate. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit and winter temperatures generally stay in the 40's and 50's Fahrenheit.

Precipitation is scarce year round, with most of the rain falling in August. Chandler is famous for its Ostrich Festival. There used to be a large number of ostrich farms in the city and the festival each year honors that tradition. A popular attraction with visitors is the Arizona Railway Museum, which houses all manner of artifacts and documents railroad related. There is a local airport, Chandler Municipal Airport, but most of the air traffic into Chandler comes through Sky Harbor International Airport in neighboring Phoenix, which is only 20 miles away from downtown Chandler.
