Chattanooga Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Chattanooga
Chattanooga is a city that is located in the eastern portion of the state of Tennessee. It is currently the fourth largest city in the state and the seat of Hamilton County government. It is on the southern border of Tennessee with Georgia. The city gets its name from an old Muskeogean word that means "rock dwelling place". The indigenous tribes were forced out of the area in 1838 by the US government. The city of Chattanooga was incorporated that same year. In 1850 a railroad was built into the city and it began to grow by leaps and bounds. The city continued to grow as a railway center and during the US Civil War it became a very important hub for Confederate shipping. The city was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Chattanooga, the Battle of Lookout Mountain, and the Battle of Missionary Ridge. After the war the city continued as an industrial and railroad hub. Industrialization has taken its toll on the cleanliness of the city, but recently city officials have attempted to clean up the city's air and attract more visitors.
Chattanooga has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot and humid summers and mild to cool winters. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit and winter temperatures generally stay above freezing. Snow occasionally falls in the city. Most of the rain comes in the months of July and August.
The city's rich history means that there are many historical sites and battlefields to see nearby. Some of the city's most popular museums are the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, and the Chattanooga Regional History Museum. The Tennessee Aquarium is very popular with tourists and hosts aquatic wildlife from the Tennessee River and from all over the world. The Chattanooga Dulcimer Festival is held each June and celebrates the dulcimer and other similar instruments with musical performances and workshops.
The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport offers connecting flights to larger airports nearby such as Memphis, Atlanta, and Raleigh-Durham. Airlines that fly out of CMA are Allegiant, Delta, US Airways, and American Eagle.
