A Traveler's Guide to Clearwater

Clearwater is a city that is located in the southwestern portion of the US state of Florida. It is in Pinellas County and is just a few miles west of Tampa and St. Petersburg. It is the seat of government for Pinellas County and is part of the greater Tampa Bay metropolitan area. English is the primary spoken and written language in Clearwater.

The area was first settled by Europeans in 1835 when the US Army constructed Fort Harrison during the Seminole Wars. The area was very fertile and located close to a natural harbor. The government offered land to anyone who would come to the area and cultivate it and families came in droves to settle the new area. The city was named after the harbor, Clear Water Harbor. The harbor had been named Clear Water because of a fresh water spring that was located nearby. The city saw extensive use as a training facility during World War 2. Even the city’s hotels were used as barracks to house troops. Today the city is a suburban harbor community with a major emphasis on tourism during the summer months.

Clearwater has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. The city is vulnerable to hurricanes because of its location in south Florida, but it is on the western side of the peninsula and therefore is not as vulnerable as cities on the eastern side such as Miami.

Clearwater is serviced by two airports, the St. Petersburg – Clearwater International Airport and Tampa International Airport. These airports offer daily flights with major domestic carriers to cities in the US, in addition to international carriers with flights to cities in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
