A Traveler's Guide to Concord

Concord is a city that is located in the northern coastal region of the US state of California.  It is the largest city in Contra Costa County and was founded in 1869.  It is located approximately 30 miles inland from San Francisco.  English is the primary spoken language in Concord.

The city was originally called "Todos Santos" which is Spanish for "all saints".  The name was changed when the city was incorporated in 1905.  The area around the present day city was primarily an agricultural area, with walnuts, grapes, tomatoes, wheat, and hay being the main crops.  During the prohibition era many of the grape vineyard were replaced with walnut farms.  The area is famous for its wine production even today.

Concord has a semi-arid climate.  That means warm summers and cool winters with low rainfall during the summer months.  Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit while winter temperatures rarely dip below 40.  Most of the areas rainfall comes in the months of January through March.

One of the largest employers in Concord is the Concord Naval Weapons Station, which is located just to the north of the city.  It was built in 1942 to service ships at Port Chicago as a storage facility.  The facility even supported war time efforts during the Vietnam conflict.

The city is home to the annual Concord Jazz Festival which showcases local and visiting talent with live musical performances, street performances, food, and parades.  The city has a long history with jazz music and is the birthplace of famous jazz musician Dave Brubeck.  The city is also the birthplace of actor Tom Hanks, Mark Hamill, and Meredith Patterson.

Buchanan Field Airport is the closest airport to downtown Concord.  It once offered flights with US Airways and WestAir, but no longer offers commercial flights.  The nearest commercial airports are San Jose and San Francisco International Airports, which offer non stop flights to destinations in the US, Canada, Mexico, Asia, and Europe daily.
