Dayton is a city that is located in the southwestern portion of the state of Ohio. It is the seat of government for Montgomery County and is currently the sixth largest city in the state of Ohio. The city was founded in 1796 by a group of settlers called “The Thompson Party”. The city later was incorporated in 1805 and was named after Jonathan Dayton who owned the land where the city was. He was also one of the original signers of the Constitution. When the Miami and Erie Canal was completed in the 1830’s the city of Dayton was finally connected to Lake Erie and Cincinnati via the Miami River. This changed everything for Dayton. It brought more people and commerce to the city and made it possible for major manufacturing companies to move to Dayton since they had access to the river to ship their things.

During World War 2 the city became a very important center for wartime production. Engines, bomb sights, and airplanes were all constructed in Dayton and the city greatly profited from the war time industrialization. That success has continued even today.

Dayton has a humid continental climate which means hot summers and cold winters with cool seasons in between. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80’s Fahrenheit and the winter temperatures can stay below freezing for weeks on end. Most of the area’s significant rainfall comes in the months of April through July.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is located near Dayton. It employs a large number of residents of the city as well as bringing income to the local economy. It is home to one of Dayton’s most visited museums, the National Museum of the United States Air Force. It is the oldest military museum in the country and draws over a million visitors each year. Within the museum is the National Aviation Hall of Fame.

The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park is a park that pays homage to the lives of the Wright Brothers, who were originally from Dayton. The Vectren Dayton Air Show is a popular air show that happens each year and is very popular with visitors.
