A Traveler's Guide to Denton

Denton is a city that is located in the northeastern portion of the US state of Texas.  It is a part of the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.  It is also the seat of government for Denton County.  It is directly equidistant between Dallas to the south and the Oklahoma border to the north. English is the primary language spoken in Denton, although there is a growing percentage of the population that speaks Spanish.

The land around Denton was settled in 1846 and the city was incorporated a few years later in 1857.  It was named after Captain John B. Denton of the Texas militia.
Denton has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and mild winters.  Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's at times but winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing.  Most of the area's rainfall comes in the months of June through August.

The most historic site in Denton is the Courthouse on the Square, which is a former Texas courthouse that has been restored into a museum that displays exhibits from local and area history.

The city is also host to some of northeastern Texas' most well attended festivals.  The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival attracts almost a quarter of a million people each year.  It is held at Civic Center Park in downtown Denton and features live musical performances, food, crafts, rides, and competitions.  The annual North Texas State Fair and Rodeo is one of the longest running rodeos in the country and can trace its beginnings back to 1928.  This event highlights the old west, cowboy culture of Texas from years past.  There are live musical performances by country music stars, rodeo events, and competitions.  The Denton Holiday Lighting Festival is the annual inauguration of the holiday season by decorating the town with lights.  The festival usually includes musical performances and outdoor food venues.

Denton Municipal Airport is located three miles west of the city and offers no commuter service at this time.  Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is the closest major airport to the city.
