Eugene Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Eugene
Eugene is a city that is located in the western portion of the state of Oregon. It is currently the third largest city in the state behind Portland and Salem. The city gets its name from Eugene Franklin Skinner, the man who is credited with founding the city in 1846. Skinner built a log cabin and used it to trade furs and trinkets. In 1850 a post office was added and soon the city began to grow.As the town grew the people wanted an institute of higher learning, so they collected funds to build a public university. That university later became the University of Oregon. The city has become a university town today, and the university employs more people in Eugene than any other business.
Eugene has a marine west climate, which means mild temperatures year round. The summers are dry with highs generally staying around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Winters are mild with temperatures generally staying in the 50’s Fahrenheit. Precipitation is common, and the most precipitation falls in the months of November through March.
Because of the natural resources at hand, Eugene’s economy is based primarily on the lumber and recreational vehicle manufacturing industries. The area around the city is perfect for outdoor recreation and there are several parks in and around the city. Hendricks Park and Alton Baker Park are two of the most popular. The city of Eugene is one of the most bike friendly cities in the country. Many bike lanes and bike trails have been added to cater to the large cycling population in the city. Eugene was named the fifth most bike friendly city by Bicycling magazine in 2010.
The University of Oregon Ducks compete in the NCAA Division 1 Pacific Ten conference in over 20 men’s and women’s sports. Autumn weekends in Eugene are lively as the Ducks football team competes each weekend. Expect to see townspeople dressed in yellow and green, the team’s colors.
