A Traveler's Guide to Evansville

Evansville is a city that is located in the extreme southwestern portion of the US state of Indiana. It is the third largest city in the state and is the largest city in all of southern Indiana. It is the seat of government for Vanderburgh County, and English is the primary spoken and written language in Evansville.

Evansville is located on the banks of the Ohio River. The spot was first discovered by French explorers who named the area "'La Belle Riviere" which means "The Beautiful River". Later the name was changed to Evansville in honor of Colonel Bob Evans, an officer in the War of 1812. It was hoped that the name change would attract more settlers. The city's growth exploded when the Wabash and Erie Canal was completed. This canal connected the Great Lakes to the Ohio River and made Evansville a very popular spot for river shipping.

During World War 2 Evansville produced a large number of vehicles for the war effort in addition to several P-47 Thunderbolt fighters. The city continued industrialization after the war was over. Over time the city has become the financial and industrial hub of southern Indiana and the tri-city area.

Evansville has a humid continental climate, which means hot summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip into the 30's Fahrenheit from time to time. Snowfall occurs periodically, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.

There are several venues for the performing arts in Evansville. The Evansville Philharmonic is houses at the Victory Theatre and performs regularly throughout the year. Other concerts and events are held at The Centre and the Mesker Amphitheatre.

The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival is one of the largest festivals in southern Indiana. It is held in the first week of October and attracts tens of thousands of people each year.
