Gilbert is a city in the state of Arizona, located just southeast of the greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Recently the city has been named "The Safest City in Arizona" by the CQ Press. The city is named after William "Bobby" Gilbert who donated land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902 for the purpose of building a railroad between the cities of Phoenix and Florence. The city became popular with Mormons who fled north from Mexico in 1912. By 1920 the city was incorporated and named. At first it was an agricultural community that took water from the nearby Roosevelt Dam. It was known as the "Hay Capital of the World" until 1930.

The city's location in the desert gives it an arid climate which means that rainfall is scarce and the summers are unbearably hot. Summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit on a regular basis. Winter temperatures are typically mild and rarely dip below freezing. Most of the rainfall in the region comes in the months of January and February.

Gilbert's Cosmo Dog Park has been named Dog Park of the Year recently by Dog Fancy Magazine. The Preserve at Water Ranch is one of the premier bird preserves in the southerwestern United States and has been recognized by the National Audobon Society. Recently Gilbert has made efforts to be more bicycle friendly by including bicycle lanes on most of the town's major roads. Despite the heat, many citizens choose to bike around town for transportation as well as leisure.

Citizens of Gilbert have the convenience of being located next to a large city, Phoenix, without all the traffic and headaches of big city life, not to mention the lower cost of living. The closest major airport is Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport which is approximately 25 miles away from downtown Gilbert.
