A Traveler's Guide to Grand Prairie

Grand Prairie is a city that is located in the northeastern portion of the state of Texas. It is a part of the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It has been a suburb of Dallas since 2006 and has seen its population grow in recent years.

The city of Grand Prairie was originally named "Dechman" after Alexander Dechman who was credited with founding the city in 1863. He purchased much of the land where the city is today and ensured that a railroad would connect it to other parts of Texas and the surrounding states. After a post office opened in 1877 the name had to be changed because of clerical issues with the mail. The railroad company called it Grand Prairie and the name stuck.

The city wasn't incorporated until 1909. During World War 2 Grand Prairie was an important city for aircraft manufacturing. Many of the P-51 Mustangs were built in Grand Prairie. Aircraft manufacturing continued after the war when Vought purchased the plants and continued to build aircraft.
 
Grand Prairie has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can exceed 90 degrees from time to time, but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the region's rainfall happens in the months of July and August.

The Lone Star Park is a racing track located in Grand Prairie. Races are held each Memorial Day and thousands of racing fans come from around the state. GPX Skate Park is a skate park right next to Lone Star Park. It has hosted the X-Games trial games twice and is scheduled to host them again in the future. The Verizon Theater is a performing arts venue that hosts live musical and theatrical performances year round. The Traders Village is one of the largest flea markets in the state and is located near Grand Prairie.

While there are no professional teams in Grand Prairie, there is one minor league baseball team, the Airhogs, that competes at Quiktrip Park.
