Greensboro Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Greensboro
Greensboro is the third largest city in the state of North Carolina. The city sees a lot of traffic because of it's location at the meeting of Interstates 40 and 85. The city got it's name from the famous Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene who fought in a battle nearby at the Battle of Guilford Court House in 1781. This battle bled Cornwallis’ army so much that he retreated to Virginia, a move which eventually allowed him to be surrounded at Yorktown.
The city's history doesn't stop with the Revolutionary War though. As a Confederate state during the Civil War, North Carolina and Greensboro saw it's share of action during the war. In fact, the capital of North Carolina was moved to Greensboro for a short time during the war. After the war was over the city became a textile factory town and began the change from agriculture to manufacturing. Over time the city continued to grow in wealth and population. Several high profile companies moved to Greensboro and set up their headquarters there. These companies include Vicks Chemical Company, Carolina Steel Corporation, and Pomona Terra Cotta Works.
The summer months are warm and humid in Greensboro, with temperatures often reaching into the high 80's and low 90's Fahrenheit. Greensboro is famous for its summer time thunderstorms as well. Winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing and generally stay in the 40's or 50's Fahrenheit. The months of June and July experience the most precipitation.
The International Civil Rights Center and Museum is a popular attraction in Greensboro. it chronicles the history of the civil rights movement in the United States. The Bog Garden is an elevated boardwalk that makes its way through 2 miles of a wetland conservatory. The Greensboro Arboretum houses local plant life as well as plants form around the world.
