A Traveler's Guide to Hartford
Hartford is a city that is located in the center of the US state of Connecticut. It is the capital as well as the third largest city in the state. It's nickname is the "Insurance Capital of the World" because of the number of insurance companies that are headquartered in it. It is one of the oldest cities in the United State and has been hailed as a beautiful and wealthy city by many residents and visitors. English is the primary language spoken in Hartford. The region of Hartford was first settled by Europeans in 1614. The original settlers intended the location to be a fur trading depot and they named it Fort Goede Hoop. Later the name was changed to Hartford in honor of the city of Hertford, England, the home of Samuel Stone who was one of the original founders. The city survived the War for Independence with relatively little damage, compared to other cities in the area. The town was home to Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, in the later part of the 19th century. The construction of highways in the 20th century caused the city to spread out and today it is a heavily suburb-ed city.
Hartford has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the high 80's, which is quite warm for New Englanders. Winter temperatures can dip below freezing for several days on end. Snowfall is common in the winter months. Rainfall occurs periodically throughout the year, with most of the rain falling in the months of July and August.
There are several cultural sites of interest in Hartford. One of them is the Aetna Headquarters. This is the world's largest colonial revival building. It is a fine example of the colonial architectural style. The Armsmear is the Colt family estate. The Colt family made its riches by manufacturing firearms. The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts was built in the 1930's and hosts several musical and theatrical performances throughout the year. Bushnell Park is one of the largest outdoor park areas in the city and is home to the Soldier's and Sailors Memorial Arch, which honors fallen Civil War soldiers and sailors.
