High Point is a city that is located in the central portion of the US state of North Carolina. North Carolina is located in the extreme eastern portion of the continental United States, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. High Point is in Guilford County and is the eighth largest city in the state. Some of the earliest settlers of the High Point region were German immigrants. The city's name came from the fact that it was the highest point on the North Carolina Railroad between Charlotte and Goldsboro. Its central location made it an ideal place for the shipment and storage of raw goods such as tobacco and cotton. In the late 19th century the city transitioned from an agricultural community to an industrial community. It constructed warehouses and factories and soon High Point was one of the largest producers of textiles and furniture in the southern United States. Today the city maintains some of its industrial heritage, but the city’s economy relies heavily on the institutions of higher learning in the city, such as High Point University.

High point has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Thunderstorms can be severe from time to time in the summer months.
