Huntington Beach Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Huntington Beach
Huntington Beach is a city that is located in the southern portion of the state of California. It is south of Los Angeles in Orange County on the coastline. It is a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike, especially during the warm summer months. The city gets its name from railroad tycoon Henry Huntington who constructed early railroads that connected the region to Los Angeles and other large cities nearby. Soon the city became a popular spot for beach goers and tourists. The city was incorporated in 1909. In it's beginnings, the area around Huntington Beach was used to grow things such as celery and beets, but over time the major industry of the region became tourism.
Huntington Beach has a Mediterranean climate, which means mild temperatures year round. Summer temperatures rarely exceed the mid 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures generally stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The region doesn't receive much rainfall, but when it comes it comes in January through March. The city is kept cool year round because of the ocean breezes that it is exposed to along the coastline.
One of the most popular spots in Huntington Beach is Main Street and the Pier. Main Street is the primary shopping venue in the city. It continues to the ocean and stops where the Huntington Pier begins. The Pier extends out into the water and has a Ruby's Diner at the end. Huntington Beach has been called "Surf City USA" because of its favorable surfing beaches. The city is host to the annual US Open of Surfing and Beach Games each summer. Some of the top surfers in the country come to compete and the city is bustling with amateurs and professionals alike. The July Fourth parade has been held annually for decades and is one of the largest of its kind in southern California. The city attracts millions of visitors each year to its sunny beaches and care free California atmosphere.
Local airports include Orange County (John Wayne) Airport, Burbank, Ontario, Long Beach, and Los Angeles International Airports.
