A Traveler's Guide to Lima
Lima is a city that is located on the western coast of the South American nation of Peru. It is the capital and largest city in the country. It is the fifth largest city in Latin America with almost nine million residents. The city was founded in 1535 by the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro. It was originally named La Ciudad de Reyes which means "The City of Kings" in Spanish. Today it is the financial and economic hub of Peru. Spanish is the official spoken and written language in Lima.Peru was originally a Spanish colony, and as such paid tribute to Spain. The country has since won its independence from Spain and is an autonomous nation. It has suffered through several terrible earthquakes over the years but has rebuilt and recovered after each one of them. The most important industries to the city are textile production, fishing, chemicals, leatherworking, and oil refinement.
Lima has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August.
The city of Lima is famous for its many parks. Most of them are located near downtown Lima. The Park of the Reserve houses the largest fountains in the world, known as the Magical Circuit of Water. The Park of the Reserve, the Park of the Exposition, and the Camp de Marte are some of the other large parks in the city.
The beaches of Lima are very popular with tourists. Thousands of people visit them each year. The coastal areas have been developed in hopes of attracting more tourists to the area. There are several high end hotels and resorts along the Lima coast line. Several theaters nearby offer performances, such as the Segura Theater, the Municipal Theater, and the Japanese-Peruvian Theater.
Lima is serviced by the Jorge Chavez International Airport, which is the largest airport by volume in the country. This airport offers daily flights with major domestic carriers to cities in Peru, in addition to international carriers with flights to cities in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
