Killeen is a city located in the eastern half of the US state of Texas. It is in Bell County and is part of the greater Temple-Killeen-Fort Hood Metropolitan area. It is primarily a military town, because of its location directly next to Fort Hood. English is the official language of Killeen although there is a large percentage of the population that speaks Spanish.

Killeen was originally a stop along the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway. The land around the railroad stop was purchased in 1872 by Frank P. Killeen for the purpose of building a town. Stores, depots, schools, and a saloon were built and soon the town was named Killeen in honor of its founder. The city’s location on the railroad made it an ideal spot for shipping cotton and grain, the areas two largest agricultural products. Soon, Killeen cotton was being shipped all over the southern states. The city maintained its agricultural identity well into the 20th century, until Fort Hood was constructed in 1950. Today most of the city's population is tied to the fort. It is one of the fastest growing military towns in the United States.

Killeen has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August.

The primary venue for the performing arts in Killeen is the Vive Les Arts Theatre, which is a full time arts organization which puts on several live theatrical performances each year. The theater has performed many Broadway musicals over the years as well.

There are several notable residents who hail from Killeen, including Robert Gray a World War 2 pilot who flew on Doolittle’s raid, Elvis Presley who lived in the city for a short time, and Burt Reynolds. The area is serviced by the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport. The city offers HOP buses that transport citizens to and from the airport.
