Kissimmee is a city that is located in the central region of the US state of Florida. Florida is the most extreme southeastern state in the continental United States. The city was founded in the 19th century and was originally named Allendale. It was renamed Kissimmee when it was incorporated in 1883. The city was built by Hamilton Disston, a businessman from Philadelphia who had contracted with the state of Florida to drain the wetlands of southern Florida in exchange for half the land drained. He constructed a shipyard in Kissimmee along the river and soon thousands of people moved to the area for jobs in the new factories. The area's economy changed over time to rely more on agriculture and cattle ranching, until 1971 when Walt Disney opened a park nearby in Orlando. Since then the city's primary source of income has been tourism.

Kissimmee has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Thunderstorms can be severe from time to time. The city is vulnerable to hurricanes because of its location in southern Florida.

Kissimmee Gateway Airport served the area until 2008 when it closed down. Now, the closest major airport is Orlando International Airport, which offers daily domestic flights to the United States and international flights to cities in Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
