The city was founded by two brothers in 1836. It was originally named Biddle City. The two brothers plotted out the city but did so in an area that was flooded most of the year with no livable ground nearby. They then traveled back to Lansing, New York to sell plots of land. They were successful and when the residents of Lansing arrived at the location they realized they had been tricked. Those who decided to stay settled the area and named it Lansing Township in honor of their hometown in New York. As the city grew, eventually it was selected to be the state capital. The name was officially shortened to just Lansing in 1848. The city became a hub for industrial production in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today the economy of Lansing is greatly diversified between banking, education, finance, insurance, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Lansing has a humid continental climate, which means hot summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip into the 30's Fahrenheit from time to time. Snowfall occurs periodically, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.

Lansing is a university town. It is home to the Michigan State University Spartans, who compete in over 20 men's and women's sports in the NCAA Division 1 Big Ten Conference. The university is the second largest employer in the city.

The Capital City African American Cultural Association puts on a parade and festival each year to honor the cultural roots of the city. The Michigan Pride Festival is a gay and lesbian pride celebration held each June. The Lansing JazzFest is held each year and attracts large numbers of musicians and visitors from all over the country.
