A Traveler's Guide to Laredo

Laredo is a city in the southern portion of the state of Texas. It is located along the northern border of the Rio Grande River. Because it is a "border town", most of the city's economy is based on international trade with Mexico to the south. 

The city has a rich history. It was originally a Spanish settlement, and then it was acquired by Mexico when Mexico won its independence from Spain. During the Mexican American War, General Santa Anna was driven from the city and the Texas Rangers established a settlement there and eventually built Fort McIntosh nearby to protect the settlement from Mexican bandidos. The city is the oldest inland border crossing between the US and Mexico. 

Because of its southern location, the city of Laredo experiences the semi-arid climate that is common to the surrounding areas of Texas and Mexico. Summers are hot and humid with temperatures reaching into the high 90's Fahrenheit on a regular basis. Winters are very mild with temperatures staying in the 50's and 60's during the winter days. Rain is scarce year round but the most rain falls in the months of May and June. 

The largest annual festival in Laredo is Washington's Birthday Celebration, which is a month long event that celebrates George Washington's birthday. It was begun in 1898 and includes fireworks, concerts, carnivals, air shows, and outdoor picnicking. Jamboozie is a part of Washington's birthday celebration and is similar to Mardi Gras, held in New Orleans, with many parades, colors, dancing, and parties. 

In the hot summer months the best spot to be at is Lake Casa Blanca International State park. The park is located on an artificial lake and offers swimming, boating, fishing, and water sports to locals and visitors alike. The Laredo Country Club is one of the most famous golf courses in the state. 

The closest major airport to Laredo is Laredo International Airport which offers daily flights to George Bush International Airport in Houston.
