A Traveler's Guide to Little Rock

Little Rock is a city that is located in the center of the state of Arkansas. It is both the capital and the largest city in the state. It is located along Interstate 40, which runs right through the city and acts as a major thoroughfare for east to west overland shipping in the United States. The city gets its name from a geographic formation near the town along the Arkansas River. There is a group of small rocks that marked the location of the river crossing. The place was referred to as "la petite roche", which is French for "Little Rock". 

The first permanent buildings were constructed in 1812 along the Arkansas River by some fur trappers. From there the city began to grow as a trade depot along the river. Eventually the city became the capital of the Arkansas Territory and was incorporated in 1831. The city has grown since then and has become the most important city in the state. 

Little Rock's location in the southern part of the United States means that it has a humid subtropical climate. This means that summers are hot and humid and winters are mild. Summer temperatures get up to the 90's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing. Most of the area's precipitation comes in the months of April and May. 

There are several museums and historic sites in and around Little Rock to see. The Arkansas Art Center is the largest such institution in the state. It houses art and provides space for performances of visual and musical groups. The William J. Clinton Presidential Center houses the Clinton presidential library. The library is built as a bridge over the Arkansas River, as a reference to former President Clinton's desire to build a "bridge to the 21st century". The Center also houses a Clinton-era recreation of the Oval Office. The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History pay homage to one of the most famous native of Little Rock, General Douglas MacArthur, with displays and memorabilia from his illustrious military career.
