A Traveler's Guide to Midland

Midland is a city that is located in the western region of the US state of Texas. It is the seat of government for Midland County and is famous for being the home of former president George W. Bush. The city is combined with Odessa to create the greater Midland metropolitan area. English is the primary spoken and written language in Midland, although a large percentage of the population speaks Spanish.

The city was founded in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railway established a train depot there. The spot was originally a refueling half-way spot between Fort Worth and El Paso. The station was named Midway Station because of its location halfway between the two cities. Later when the city was incorporated in 1885 the town voted to change the name from Midway to Midland. There were too many Midways in Texas at that point and they wanted to avoid confusion.

The most important year in the history of Midland is 1923. That is the year that oil was discovered nearby. Midland became the center of the western Texas oil industry. The city grew exponentially as oil refineries and drillers came to the town. The city has continued to harvest petroleum, and recently it has begun to tap into the large natural gas reserves located beneath the earth’s surface as well.

Midland has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August.

The Permian Basin Petroleum Museum houses several displays and interactive exhibits about the region’s oil mining history. It also houses the collection of race cars that were designed by Jim Hall, a Midland native who designed Formula One racing cars.
