A Traveler's Guide to Mobile

Mobile is a city that is located in the extreme southern portion of the state of Alabama. It is the third largest city in Alabama behind Birmingham and Montgomery. Mobile is the largest port city in the state and handles almost all of the shipping that comes into Alabama. The city sits on the banks of the Mobile River and the Gulf of Mexico. 

The area around Mobile was first settled by the French in 1702, who intended the city to be the capital of its Louisiana territory. In 1763 the area was ceded to the British after the French and Indian War. The British lost control of Mobile to the Spanish during the War for Independence and the United States won control of it from the Spanish during the War of 1812. By the 1830's Mobile was an important port city. It's primary industry was the cotton trade, but it also exported other agricultural products and manufactured goods. The city has continued this industry over the years and has recently begun shipbuilding with the coming of Austal USA, a major shipbuilding firm. 

Mobile's location on the Gulf of Mexico gives it a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures generally stay around the 90's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely dip below 50. Most of the city's rainfall comes in the months of July and August. 

Because of its diverse history, the city of Mobile has many different heritages. Every year The Carnival is held which celebrates the regions historical diversity. In fact, the Carnival began as a Mardi Gras celebration to honor the French roots of the city. Mobile's Mardi Gras was the first such celebration in the United States and it is currently the city with the longest running annual Mardi Gras celebration. 

One of the most popular tourist destinations is the USS Alabama, which is located in Battleship Memorial Park on Mobile Bay. This World War 2 era battleship is now a floating museum. Visitors can tour it as well as the USS Drum, a World War 2 era submarine nearby.
