A Traveler's Guide to New Haven

New Haven is a city that is located in the southern section of the US state of Connecticut.  It is the second largest city by area in the state, behind Bridgeport, and is the sixth largest city by population in New England.  The city was founded in 1638 by European settlers.  In 1701 it was made the co-capital of Connecticut and a few years later in 1716 Yale College was founded there.  The city was torn by the Revolutionary War, as several of its residents had fought with the British during the French and Indian War.

The city began to adapt to the industrial era thanks to the efforts of Eli Whitney, a graduate of Yale, who lived in New Haven and worked on his famous cotton gin there.  Today Eli Whitney's original factory has been converted into a museum, called the Eli Whitney Museum, where visitors can see memorabilia and artifacts from his original works.  The museum offers tours and hands on displays as well.

The city is also famous as the birthplace of the Colt weapons empire.  In 1836 Samuel Colt invented his famous automatic revolver in a factory that was owned at one time by Eli Whitney himself.  The city continued its weapons legacy when the New Haven Arms Company became the Winchester Repeating Arms Company during the US Civil War.  The weapons factories brought jobs and revenue to the citizens of New Haven.

New Haven has a humid continental climate, which means mild summers and cold winters.  Summer temperatures rarely exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit but winter temperatures can dip below freezing for weeks at a time.  Snowfall is very common during the winter months.  Rainfall is common throughout the year as well, but most of it falls in the months of March through June.
Yale University is one of the most prestigious universities in the United States.  It is one of the "Ivy League" colleges of the northeast.  It is home to some of the oldest architecture in the state as well as some of the most extensive art and cultural collections in New England.
