Orange Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Orange
Orange is a city that is located in the southern portion of the US state of California. It is a fairly young city that has benefits from the increased popularity of the Orange County region in southern California. English is the primary language spoken in the city, although there are many other ethnicities present. The area around Orange was originally agricultural farmland that was fought over by Mexican and American forces for years. Finally when California was added to the US, the city of Orange became a permanent American possession. The region and city were named by Andrew Glassell, one of the earliest land owners in the area, after Orange County, Virginia where he used to live. The city was finally incorporated in 1888 and soon a railroad was built to Orange and the city became flooded with immigrants and new settlers. Today Orange is primarily an urban center of Los Angeles that has profited from the increased property values of southern California homes.
Orange has a Mediterranean climate, which means mild temperatures year round. The summer high temperatures are generally in the low 80's, and the winter temperatures usually stay comfortable in the 50's and 60's Fahrenheit. Rainfall doesn't occur very often during the year but the most rain comes in the months of January through March.
The Orange Zoo is a small but well maintained zoo within the city limits. The Block at Orange is a large outdoor shopping complex in the city, complete with department stores and large movie theaters. The Orange Plaza is home to several cultural events throughout the year. The Orange International Street Fair is held each Labor Day weekend and features a wide variety of musical performances and food from around the world. The citizenry of Orange is very diverse and that diversity is reflected in this street fair.
The closest major airport to Orange is the John Wayne-Orange County International Airport in nearby Santa Ana. Other area airports are Los Angeles International, Burbank, Long Beach, and Ontario International Airports. These airports offer daily flights to destinations in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
