A Traveler's Guide to Oxnard

Oxnard is a city that is located in the southern portion of the state of California in Ventura County. It is the 21st largest city in California and is an important agricultural center, being the strawberry and lima bean capital of California. 

The city was originally a ranching area that produced cattle and chicken. Eventually farmers moved in and bought up a lot of the ranches and planted lima beans and barley. The city gets its name from Henry Oxnard, who built a factory nearby in 1897. The city was incorporated in 1903 and Andrew Carnegie financed a library to be built in 1907. Around the time of World War 2 Point Mugu and Port Hueneme were built nearby on the coast. They became the only major ports between Los Angeles to the south and San Francisco to the north. The area continued to grow and attract more and more businesses and today it is an important transportation hub, with Amtrak, Greyhound, Union Pacific, and Southern California railroad all stopping in Oxnard. 

The city experiences a Mediterranean climate because of its location near the coast and its exposure to onshore ocean breezes. Winters are mild and summers are warm. Temperatures generally stay in the 70's Fahrenheit in the summers and in the 60's Fahrenheit in the winters. The region gets most of its rainfall during the months of January through March. 

Oxnard is known for its strawberries. The city is the largest producer of the fruit in the entire state and is responsible for almost a third of the entire annual state crop. Considering that California supplies nearly 85 percent of the world's strawberries, the city of Oxnard is one of the biggest strawberry producing cities in the world. Because of this heritage the city hosts the California Strawberry Festival during the summer months. Vendors bring strawberry themed foods and there are live musical performances. 

Oxnard also has almost 20 miles of oceanfront. The Oxnard beaches are world famous as some of the best surfing beaches in the US.
