Pasadena Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Pasadena
Pasadena is a city that is located in the southern portion of the state of California. It is the seventh largest city in Los Angeles County. The city was originally owned by the Mexican government, but when California became a state it switched hands over to the US government. The property was purchased by the Southern California Orange and Citrus Growers Association and then later sold to individuals. The name comes from a Native American word which means "of the valley". The city voted on the name and incorporated itself in 1886.Pasadena became very popular very quickly. The Santa Fe Railway passed through the area and people traveling through saw how beautiful the area was. Soon wealthy easterners came to Pasadena to spend the winters. Hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs were built to accommodate the new influx of visitors. During World War 2 Pasadena became a major staging area for the war in the Pacific. After the war the city continued to be a place of industry and manufacturing.
During the 20th century the city saw its share of riots and civil unrest. For a time downtown Pasadena was a crime filled place, but recent efforts by the city council and law enforcement personnel have cleaned the city up considerably.
The city of Pasadena has a semi-arid climate, which means hot summers and mild winters with very little rainfall year round. Summer temperatures can exceed 90 degrees at times and winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees. Most of the region's scarce rainfall comes in the months of January through March.
The major attraction to Pasadena each year is the Rose Bowl and the Rose Parade. Each year on New Year's Day the Rose Parade is held in Pasadena. This parade features floats, displays, and bands from the local area as well as from all over the country. The Rose Bowl is one of the oldest and grandest college football postseason games. It is the home of the UCLA Bruin's football team and it has also hosted several Super Bowls.
There are several major airports near Pasadena, including Los Angeles International Airport, Orange County John Wayne Airport, Long Beach, and Burbank Airports. All are within driving distance of Pasadena.
