A Traveler's Guide to Pasadena

Pasadena is a city that is located in the eastern portion of the state of Texas. It is the second largest city in Harris County and is part of the greater Houston metropolitan area. The region around Pasadena was originally called Allen Ranch and extended all the way to the city of Harrisburg nearby. The city was founded in 1893 when a railroad was built through the area. John H. Burnett was the founder and he was the one who gave the city its name. He named it Pasadena because he thought the area reminded him of Pasadena, California which he had visited earlier.

The town grew slowly until 1901 when the Texas Oil Boom began and Pasadena became the site of many oil refineries. At one point Pasadena was growing faster than neighboring Houston. In 1963 NASA built the Johnson Space Center nearby which brought in more residents and more income to the city.

Pasadena has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's and 90's Fahrenheit while winter temperature generally stay in the 40's and 50's. Rainfall is common year round with the vast majority of the rain falling in the summer months of May through August.

The most popular museum in Pasadena is the Pasadena Historical Museum. Other museums include the Bay Area Museum and the Armand Bayou Nature Center. The Pasadena Philharmonic Orchestra regularly performs for concerts and special events.

The city was the setting for the 1980 movie Urban Cowboy, starring John Travolta and Debra Winger. In 1900 the Galveston Hurricane relocated much of Galveston's population to Pasadena. Clara Barton of the American Red Cross personally donated over a million strawberry plants to the city to help them recover from the storm. The plants did so well that Pasadena was exporting almost thirty train car loads of the fruit each day. To pay homage to that history, an annual Strawberry Festival is held each year with thousands attending.
