Pembroke Pines is a city that is located in the extreme southeastern portion of the state of Florida. It is located in Broward County and is currently the second largest city in the county. The city is fairly young, having only been incorporated in 1960. The name comes from the city's location on Pembroke Road and from all the pine trees in the area. The road most likely gets its name from one of the early landowners in the region, the Earl of Pembroke.

The town was originally a spot for dairy farming. The city grew as the neighboring region grew, but it saw its most extensive growth following Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Thousands of people moved away from Miami after the hurricane and settled in Pembroke Pines, which was further inland and therefore safer from hurricanes. Subsequent hurricanes in the area affected the city harshly as well. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 passed over the city before going on to destroy New Orleans. Hurricane Wilma also hit the city in the same year and wiped out the city's electricity for days on end.
