A Traveler's Guide to Pensacola
Pensacola is a city that is located in the northwestern Panhandle region of the US state of Florida. It is the largest city in Escambia County and serves as the seat of county government. English is the primary language spoken in Pensacola, with over 95% of the population speaking it as their first language. The area around Pensacola was at one time nothing more than swamp lands and cotton fields. The city's access to a natural harbor has made it an important shipping hub for the Gulf of Mexico states. Pensacola has the distinction of being under the control of five separate countries during its history. It is called the "City of Five Flags" for that very reason. The five flags that have flown over it are the flags of Spain, Britain, France, the Confederate State of America, and the United States of America.
Today the economy of Pensacola is based primarily on two things: military and tourism. The city is the birthplace of naval aviation and the city is home to one of the oldest naval aviation training grounds in the country. There are several Navy bases in or around the city proper. Tourism is also a very lucrative industry for Pensacola. Thousands and thousands of people visit the city each year because of the beautiful white sand beaches and warm clear waters. Beach festivals are held each Labor Day and attract visitors from all over the southern states.
Pensacola has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can get into the 90's Fahrenheit but winter temperatures rarely dip below the 40 degree mark. Rainfall is common throughout the year in Pensacola, but the vast majority of the rainfall occurs in the months of June through August when the city can experience random thunderstorms at any time.
The city is home to several universities and colleges, including Pensacola State College, the University of West Florida, and Pensacola Christian College.
One of the most popular museums in Pensacola is the Museum of Naval Aviation, which houses aircraft from every time period of American history. The museum is complete with hands on displays and movie presentations.
The Pensacola Regional Airport services the Pensacola area and offers connecting flights to larger airports such as Dallas and Atlanta.
