A Traveler's Guide to Peoria
Peoria is a city that is located in the center of the US state of Illinois. It is the largest city in the Illinois River and is currently the seat of government for Peoria County. Currently it is the fifth largest city in the state and is one of the fastest growing cities in the mid-west. English is the official spoken and written language in Peoria.Peoria was settled in 1680 by French explorers Cavelier and de La Salle. The original settlement was a fort built on the Illinois River. Eventually a new fort, Fort Clark, was built in 1813 and the area was officially named Peoria. It was incorporated in 1835 and became an important shipping and storage depot city along the Illinois River. Factories came during the industrial era and the city has retained a portion of both its agricultural and industrial heritage.
Peoria has a humid continental climate, which means hot summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip into the 30's Fahrenheit from time to time. Snowfall occurs periodically, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.
The Steamboat Classic is a very popular cultural event in Peoria. It is a traditional four mile race that attracts runners from all over the world. It is held each summer, usually in the months of June or July, sometimes August. The Lakeview Museum for the Arts and Scientists houses works of art by local and international artists, and the Wheels 'o Time Museum houses displays about the history of industrialization.
The Peoria Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest in the country. It regularly performs concerts and provides performances for special events. The city is also home to the Opera Illinois, the Peoria Municipal Band, the Peoria Area Civic Chorale and the Central Illinois Youth Symphony.
Peoria is serviced by the Greater Wayne Downing Peoria International Airport. Four major domestic carriers service the airport: Delta, United, American, and Allegiant Air.
