Pittsburgh Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is the second largest city in the state of Pennsylvania and is the center of government for Allegheny County. It is located primarily between the Appalachian and Ohio River Valleys. Pittsburgh is historically known for its involvement in the steel industry but today the city has moved away from that past and has focused its economy mainly on financial services, healthcare, robotics, and education. There are no more active steel mills in the city limits of Pittsburgh. Companies such as PNC Bank and MNY Mellon have moved in and built their headquarters in the city.
Pittsburgh has a temperate continental climate. There are four distinct seasons in Pittsburgh and precipitation is evenly spread through most of the year. The hottest month of the year is July with highs reaching the low 90's Fahrenheit. January is the coldest month of the year with highs only averaging around the freezing mark Fahrenheit. Because of its proximity to the Allegheny Mountains, Pittsburgh receives more rain than most other cities in the region.
Downtown Pittsburgh is very historic and very scenic in places. The US Steel Tower is the tallest building downtown at 841 feet tall. The most popular part of downtown with visitors and locals alike is the Cultural District. This 14 block area of downtown is full of art venues, museums, theaters, and a growing residential area. Other spots of interest downtown are Point Park University, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Culinary Institute, and Robert Morris University.
Pittsburgh is home to several professional sports teams that compete on the national level. The Steelers compete in the NFL, the Pirates compete in the MLB, and the Penguins compete in the NHL. In addition to professional sports teams, there are a few colleges that compete in the NCAA in and around Pittsburgh. Those teams are the University of Pitt Panthers, the Duquesne University Dukes, and the Robert Morris University Colonials. Pittsburgh is definitely a sports lovers town.
