Plano Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Plano
Plano is the ninth largest city in the state of Texas and the 69th largest city in the United States. It is located within the Dallas Fort Worth metropolitan area but is a municipality unto itself. As recently as 2005, Plano was named one of the best places to live in the western United States by CNN Money magazine. The schools in Plano are among some of the highest scoring schools on national standardized tests and the poverty rate is one of the lowest in the country.
Plano was settled in the 1840's by settlers who came and built sawmills, gristmills, and a few outpost shops. Eventually more people moved to the area and mail service was established. The name Plano was adopted from the Spanish word meaning "flat" which referred to the terrain surrounding the city. The city continued to grow, aided by the completion of the Houston and Texas Railroads in 1872. Over time the city grew in accordance with its neighbors Dallas and Fort Worth. In the 1980's several businesses relocated their headquarters to Plano. Today it is the largest Dallas suburb besides Fort Worth.
Plano's economy is very business oriented. The city houses several corporate headquarters, such as Ericsson Inc., JCPenney, FritoLay, Dr Pepper, Snapple, Siemens, and Dell Enterprises. The city has a humid subtropical climate thanks to its location in the southern United States. Summers are hot and humid while winters are usually dry and cool. The July average temperature is in the 80's Fahrenheit and the January highs rarely exceed 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
The most popular cultural events in Plano that happen annually are the Plano Balloon Festival and the Plano International Festival. The Balloon Festival celebrates the hobby of hot air ballooning and the international festival celebrates the diverse history of the region and its citizens.
There are no professional sports teams in Plano, but the local teams of Dallas are not far away. Plano residents have a short drive to see a Cowboys or Mavericks game.
