Providence is a city that is located in the eastern portion of the state of Rhode Island. It is the capital and largest city in the state. It also has the distinction of being one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the country. Providence was founded by Roger Williams in the year 1636. Williams and his followers had been exiled from the neighboring Massachusetts Bay colony for religious reasons and they were seeking a place of asylum and protection. Upon finding the spot where the city now sits, it is recorded that Williams declared that he had found the spot "by God's merciful Providence", so he named it that.

The city was never occupied by the British during the War for Independence, even though colonial troops were housed there. After the war the city became an industrial hub and was known for producing textiles, jewelry, and silverware. This industrial climate attracted immigrants from Europe and soon the city became very diverse culturally.
The city has continued to produce jewelry even though the textile production has fallen away. Recently the city has begun constructing new business parks and condo complexes in hopes of attracting more businesses to the area.

Providence has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80’s Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip below freezing for weeks on end. The month with the most rainfall during the year is March.

Providence has more coffee and doughnut shops per capita than any other city in the nation. Popular spots to see around town are Waterplace Park, Roger Williams Park, the Roger Williams National Memorial, and Prospect Terrace Park. The city is also home to First Baptist Church of America, which is literally the oldest Baptist church in the Americas. It was founded by Roger Williams himself in 1638. The Old State House is a popular spot with historians and tourists alike as it reflects the architecture of the 18th century.
