Salt Lake City Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City is a city located in the northern portion of the state of Utah. It is the capital as well as the largest city in the state. It is the national headquarters for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, also known as the Mormon church. The city has a rich history and is one of the fastest growing areas in the western United States. The latter day saints arrived in 1847. They were seeking a place where they could be free from the religious persecution that they had suffered at the hands of other religions in the eastern United States. Their leader, Brigham Young, saw the valley where the city now sits and declared that it would be the place of their settlement. The settlers created their own state but it was declared to be the Utah Territory by the US government in 1850. The discovery of gold nearby attracted thousands of people to the area and over time the city grew to become an important settlement on the frontier. Recently Salt Lake City was honored by being allowed to host the winter Olympic games in 2002.
The climate of Salt Lake City is semi-arid, which means hot summers, cool springs, cool falls, and cold winters. Snow is common in the winter time and temperatures can frequently dip below freezing. Most of the are's rainfall comes in the spring months.
The economy of Salt Lake City used to be based solely on mining and railroading, but recently the city has become a very popular place for tourism in the west. Its diverse seasons provide for many outdoor activities. Snow in the winter time provides some of the best skiing in the west and warm summer temperatures are perfect for hiking, biking, and water sports. The city's church history has allowed it to preserve much history and art in the name of religion. The Church History Museum is popular with tourists and the University of Utah is the home to the Utah Museum of Natural History. Other attractions in the city are the Clark Planetarium, the Discovery Gateway Museum, the Tower Theatre, and the Fort Douglas Military Museum.
