Recently Salt Lake City was honored by being allowed to host the winter Olympic games in 2002.

The city's church history has allowed it to preserve much history and art in the name of religion. The Church History Museum is popular with tourists and the University of Utah is the home to the Utah Museum of Natural History. Other attractions in the city are the Clark Planetarium, the Discovery Gateway Museum, the Tower Theatre, and the Fort Douglas Military Museum.
