San Bernardino Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to San Bernardino
San Bernardino is a city located in the southern portion of the state of California. It is the eighteenth largest city in the state and one of the most important cities in the Inland Empire, a region of industry away from the coast in California. The city was rather loosely inhabited by indigenous tribes and Spanish explorers for quite some time. The region wasn't officially settled until the California Southern Railroad decided to build a line through the area to Los Angeles in 1883. The city was incorporated and named in 1905. During World War 2 the area continued to grow with the founding of Norton Air Force Base nearby. The city really got put on the map with the founding of the first McDonald's restaurant in 1948.
The San Bernardino area has a Mediterranean climate, which means hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The area has some of the coldest winters in southern California, with frost and snow happening occasionally. The area receives little rainfall during the year, but most of it falls during the months of January through March.
There are several annual cultural events that take place in San Bernardino. Each September the Route 66 Rendezvous is held in honor of the America's first transcontinental highway. The National Orange Show is held in the spring to honor the areas agricultural heritage. The Western Little League championships are held each August in the city as well.
The city is host to the campus of California State University San Bernardino. The university employs many town citizens as well as attracts business to the area. It also hosts an impressive collection of historical artifacts in its natural history department. These displays are open to the public and are quite extensive. Other popular spots are the Historic and Pioneer Society, the Railroad and History Museum, and the original McDonald's Restaurant location. The American Sports Museum and the Inland Empire Military Museum are popular with visitors as well. The Los Angeles area nearby is full of airports. There are no commercial airports in San Bernardino presently.
