Santa Clara has a Mediterranean climate which means mild temperatures year round. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 70's or 80's Fahrenheit while winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer is the dry season with scarce rain. Most of the areas rainfall occurs during the months of January through March.

The city is home to one major professional sports team, the San Jose Earthquakes. The earthquakes participate in the Major League Soccer western division and play their home matches at Buck Shaw Stadium on the campus of Santa Clara University. The city is also in talks with the NFL football team, the San Francisco 49ers, to build a new stadium in Santa Clara.
