Santa Clarita Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Santa Clarita
Santa Clarita is a city that is located to the northeast of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area in the southern portion of the state of California. It is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County. It is located in and takes its name from the Santa Clarita Valley. It was incorporated in 1987 as the merger of the towns of Canyon Country, Newhall, Valencia, and Saugus. Interstates 5 and 14 provide transportation between Santa Clarita and Los Angeles to the south. The city has become a popular"boomburb" of LA, which means that many people live in Santa Clarita and commute to Los Angeles to work. The area around Santa Clarita has been inhabited for centuries, but it wasn't until 1870 that permanent settlements were built. In that year the Southern Pacific Railroad decided to lay a line of track through the Santa Clarita Valley. This brought jobs and revenue to the area. The towns of Newhall and Canyon Country were formed.
Eventually the towns became popular places for the movie industry. At the time westerns were the most popular genre in Hollywood and the rustic western backdrop of the Santa Clarita Valley became the most popular place to film westerns.
Santa Clarita has a semi-arid climate. It is inland away from the cooling influences of the ocean air, so its usually a few degrees warmer than the rest of the LA area. Summers are hot and dry and winters are mild and wet. Rainfall is scarce but it falls mostly in the months of January through March.
The city of Santa Clarita has made serious efforts to make the itself as "user friendly" as possible. This includes the building of parks, hiking trails, public pools, skateparks, and outdoor sports facilities. The city is also home to several golf courses, including TPC Valencia, Vista Valencia, and Valencia Country Club.
The main attraction in Santa Clarita is Six Flags Magic Mountain, which is an amusement park located just off of Interstate 5 in the valley. It attracts thousands of visitors each year and is the number one employer in the whole city.
The valley is accessible from Los Angeles via Metrolink train services. Los Angeles International Airport is the closest major airport to Santa Clarita.
