Shreveport Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Shreveport
Shreveport is a city located in the northwestern portion of the state of Louisiana. It is the fourth largest city in the state. The city has benefited from its location on the Red River. This has allowed it to develop shipping, fishing, and water transportation industries.
In the early 19th century, the Red River near modern day Shreveport was cleared and made navigable by Captain Henry Shreve, a commander of the Army Corps of Engineers. A town was built on the shore nearby and in honor of him it was called Shreve Town. Over time the city grew because of its location on the water and it was officially incorporated as Shreveport in 1839. The city became very popular with steamboats traveling up and down the river. Large amounts of cotton and agricultural products were shipped out of Shreveport.
The city saw considerable conflict during the Civil War, and after the war it remained an important waterway stop on the river. The city continued to grow, but the industrialization of the South weakened it over time. In the late 20th century the city underwent an overhaul and riverboat gambling was brought to Shreveport. This has provided a steady stream of income for the city. Shreveport has become a very popular gaming destination for people all over the southern states.
Because of its southern location, Shreveport has a humid subtropical climate, which means lots of rainfall and hot, humid summers. Winters are mild with temperatures rarely dipping below freezing. Summer temperatures can exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The city receives most of its rainfall in the months of May and June.
The main draw to Shreveport today is the gaming industry. There are several casinos in the city, including Sam's Town Casino, Boomtown Casino, Diamond Jacks Casino, Horseshoe Casino, and Eldorado Casino. In addition to the casinos there are many restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues in the city. Shreveport has been called the "Hollywood of the South" because of the large number of films that have been made in the city. Shreveport has many sound stages and film studios, second only to Hollywood and New York.
