Sioux Falls Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Sioux Falls
Sioux Falls is a city that is located in the eastern portion of the state of South Dakota. It is the largest city in the state. It is located on the banks of the Big Sioux River near the prairies of the Great Plains. The first Europeans to visit Sioux Falls were French explorers in the early 18th century. Soon two land companies, the Dakota Land Company and the Western Town Company claimed the land where the city sits now. They constructed a protective fort and plowed fields for farming. IN 1865 Fort Dakota was built and more people moved to the area. The city was finally incorporated in 1883. Railroads helped the city to grow, as they made it easier for people to travel to the city. Railroads also made it easier for the farms of Sioux Falls to ship their goods elsewhere.
Several manufacturing plants opened up in Sioux Falls which brought even more residents. Sioux Falls soon had one of the largest stockyards in the mid-west. The city has continued to grow ever since then. CitiBank is headquartered in Sioux Falls and several other large businesses have considered relocating to this business friendly environment.
Because of it beautiful natural surroundings, Sioux Falls maintains over fifty parks throughout the city. The most popular of these is Falls Park, which is located directly beside the waterfalls on the Big Sioux River. Terrace Park, McKennan Park, Sherman Park, and Yankton Trail Park are a few other big parks in the region. There is a sixteen mile path for bikers, joggers, and walkers that snakes its way through the parks along the river. The winter months provide plenty of snow for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. These activities usually take place at Great Bear Recreation Park.
Sioux Falls has a humid continental climate. This means hot summers and cold winters, with cool autumns and springs in between. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip well below freezing from time to time. The region receives most of its precipitation in the months of June through August.
