Sterling Heights is a city that is located in the southeastern portion of the US state of Michigan.  It is the second largest suburb of the greater Detroit metropolitan area and is the fourth largest city in the state of Michigan.  English is the primary language spoken in Sterling Heights.

The city of Sterling Heights is relatively new, having been incorporated in 1968.  Before incorporation the area consisted primarily of rhubarb farms that marketed their crops in Detroit and other surrounding cities.  The city wanted to be named "Sterling", but there was already a Sterling in the county and since it was against the law to name a city twice they added "Heights" to the name to distinguish it from the other Sterling.

Sterling Heights is famous in Michigan and much of the northern United States for its annual celebrations.  Visitors travel to the city from all over the northern states.  The Memorial Day parade held each year is one of the largest in the north, attracting thousands of visitors each year.  The American-Polish Festival honors the large Polish population in Sterling Heights and the surrounding areas.  The cities of Troy and Warren have especially large Polish populations.  The festival displays Polish art, music, and food.  There are outdoor musical performances and food booths.  The Sterlingfest is held each July and August.  Dodge Park, the large park in downtown Sterling Heights, is the venue for this particular festival.  This event consists of food, music, and carnival rides.  In the past, big name music artists have made appearances and performances at this festival.

Sterling Heights has a humid, continental climate which means mild summers and cold winters.  Summer temperatures rarely get above the 80's Fahrenheit but winter temperatures can dip well below freezing for days on end.  Snowfall is very common in the winter months and can be excessive at times.  Rainfall occurs regularly during the rest of the year, with most of the rain coming in the months of July and August.
