Syracuse Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Syracuse
Syracuse is a city that is located in the middle portion of the US state of New York. It is the seat of government for Onondaga County and is the fifth largest city in the state. English is the primary language of the city, with over 98% of the population speaking it as a first language. The city was a frontier outpost for years, until 1825 when the Erie Canal was opened. Syracuse was located at a key branch of the canal and profited greatly from the canal's opening. The most important thing that the canal did for Syracuse was create a market for the salt industry. It was difficult to find and transport salt elsewhere in the country, so the salt industry became very important to Syracuse's overall economy. By the time the 20thcentury rolled around the city had become a university town because of Syracuse University. The school brought in much revenue for the surrounding area.
Syracuse has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures rarely exceed the 80's Fahrenheit but winter temperatures can be brutally cold from time to time, dipping well below freezing for days on end. Snowfall is common in the winter months, and most of the rainfall that the area receives happens in the months of July through August.
The city of Syracuse is well known for its jazz music and festivals. The M&T Syracuse Jazz Festival and the Jazz in the Square Festival are the most popular jazz festivals during the year in Syracuse. They offer local and international jazz musicians the chance to perform and display their abilities.
Syracuse is also home to the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. It is one of the most well respected symphonies in the northeast and it performs regular concerts.
The University of Syracuse competes in over 20 men's and women's collegiate sports in the NCAA Division 1 Big East conference. All home football games are played in the Carrier Dome.
The Syracuse area is serviced by the Syracuse Hancock International Airport which offers flights to major domestic hubs nearby.
