Tallahassee Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Tallahassee
Tallahassee is a city that is located in the northern portion of the state of Florida. It is the capital of the state of Florida. The area around Tallahassee was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes. When European settlers arrived they constructed settlements as early as the 1750's. In 1824 it was selected to be the state capital. The other cities that had been considered were Pensacola in the west and St. Augustine in the east. Tallahassee was nearly equidistant between these two cities so therefore it was selected to be the location of the state’s capital.During the US Civil War Tallahassee was the leading city in the sale and importation of foreign slaves in the state of Florida. It was also the leader in the growth and exportation of cotton. Tallahassee was never captured by the Union forces during the war. After the war was over the city was granted land and funds to construct several educational institutions. These institutions were Tallahassee Female Academy and the Florida Institute. These schools were later combined to become Florida State University. The city is a university town, with FSU being one of the leading employers in the city.
Tallahassee has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot and humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 90’s Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely dip below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The area is subject to frequent rainfall throughout the year and occasional intense thunderstorms in the summer months. Most of the rainfall comes during the months of July and August.
Florida State University competes in over 20 men's and women's sports in the NCAA Division 1 Atlantic Coast Conference. FSU is known primarily for the success of its football program. The university has come under criticism recently for its use of the Seminole as its mascot. However, the National Seminole Tribal Council is in favor of the mascot and appreciates the homage paid to their people by the university. Expect to see Tallahassee covered in garnet and gold on Saturdays in the autumn. Stop by Doak Campbell Stadium to watch the planting of the spear and listen to the war chant during a home football game.
