Thornton is a city that is located in the northern portion of the US state of Colorado. It is a suburb of the greater Denver-Aurora-Broomfield metropolitan area. It is the sixth largest city in the state of Colorado. English is the official spoken and written language of Thornton.

The city was incorporated in 1956. Prior to that the area was primarily farmland and orchards. The land was purchased by Sam Hoffman in 1953 and the town was planned out and built. It was named Thornton in honor of the former governor of Colorado Dan Thornton. The city now exists primarily as a bedroom suburb community for Denver. It is located approximately seven miles from the city limits of Denver and many of the residents of Thornton commute to Denver daily for work.

Thornton has a semi-arid climate, which means warm summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures can exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit in July and August and winter temperatures can dip below freezing for days on end. Snow is common in the winter months. Rainfall is scarce throughout the year, but most of the rainfall comes in the months of January through March.

The city of Thornton has some of the most park acreage per capita of any city in the state. There are over eighty parks in the city and almost two thousand acres of open spaces. The city has miles upon miles of hiking and bicycling trails, as well as recreational facilities such as the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center and the Thornton Community Center. Thornton is also home to some of the nicest golf courses in the Denver area, including Riverdale Knolls Golf Course, Heritage Todd Creek Golf Course, and Thorncreek Golf Course.
